The Faculty of Engineering at Cyprus International University (CIU) achieved a remarkable success by becoming the Eurasian Champion at the Fibonacci Eurasian Robot Olympiad, held in Antalya between April 15–20, 2025. Two separate teams composed of students from the Department of Computer and Software Engineering by becoming the first in their respective categories, and bringing great international pride to the university.

The team named Cyprus Thunderstorms won the line-following robot category, while Cyprus Hawks became champions in the maze-solving robot category. After successfully progressing through preliminary rounds held in different regions of Turkey, both teams managed to climb to the top of the podium in the final stage held in Antalya.
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kuşaf, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at CIU, expressed great pride in the students’ achievements and emphasized that the competition offered significant opportunities for students to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. He highlighted that, unlike the controlled conditions of laboratory environments, many real-world factors come into play in such competitions, making these experiences crucial for students' professional development.

Both teams were mentored by Mustafa Kemal Ambar, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering at CIU. The Cyprus Thunderstorms team, consisting of Umut Sevinç, Furkan Uzun, and Alper Yüksel, triumphed in the line-following robot category. Meanwhile, the Cyprus Hawks team, made up of Mert Yorulmaz, Mert Aktan Çeliker, and Melih Yurt, claimed the championship in the maze-solving robot category.

CIU’s strong academic foundation in engineering and its continuous support for student projects were once again highlighted through this achievement. The success of the students on an international platform also stands as a testament to the university’s high quality of education.
