EL 209 – Rock and Mineralogy Laboratory

Petroleum engineering undergraduate and graduate students find opportunities to identify and examined minerals and rock in Rock and Mineral Laboratory. Rocks are composed of minerals that have specific chemical compositions and ordered atomic structures. Hand sized various types of rock (magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks) can be examined and identified in this laboratory. Determination of the mineral composition of the rocks can be also done in laboratory facilities after the grinding process. In this laboratory Saybolt, 2 tube viscosimeter and porosimeter equipment are available and undergraduate and graduate students can determine the viscosity and porosity of petroleum products.

Research Opportunities

• Identification of rocks,
• Determination of viscosity and porosities of petroleum products,
• Preparation of sections from the rocks to investigate the minerals under a microscope,
• Determination of the mineral composition of the rocks by high technological equipment (XRD).
