The Computer Engineering PhD Program offers Doctor of Philosophy degrees in computer engineering, providing a research-oriented education for those aiming for an academic, industrial, or entrepreneurial career. The objective of the department is to provide a program that is both broad and deep, covering diverse technical areas within the field of computer engineering. Two named academic tracks support this objective: Computing Systems & Software Engineering and Signal Processing & Communication. Each academic track can be tailored to meet the educational goals of each student.
The Ph.D. Program requires coursework, a seminar, a qualification exam, thesis research, and a dissertation defense. Students take seven Ph.D.-level elective courses based on their interests and give a seminar on their thesis proposal topic. After completing the coursework and passing the qualification exam, students proceed to their thesis research. To defend the thesis, students must have at least one article published in an SCI or SCI-Expanded journal. The program is a member of Oracle Academy and Microsoft Imagine Academy.
Completion of the Ph.D. degree establishes the ability to conduct independent basic or applied research, preparing graduates for careers in academia, industry, or government. Students pursue theoretical and empirical studies on a topic determined by their interests, faculty research areas, and departmental research facilities. Our graduates can work as research and development members in companies or as researchers and academics at universities.
